SATA vs NVMe SSD for a Laptop

SATA and NVMe are different ways a laptop connects to storage. A fast NVMe drive cannot be assumed to fit a machine designed for a 2.5-inch SATA hard drive.

Common configurations

Many older laptops use a 2.5-inch SATA bay, where a 2.5-inch SATA SSD can replace an HDD. Other laptops use an M.2 slot; some M.2 slots support SATA, some NVMe, and some both. The physical shape alone does not prove electrical compatibility. A few machines have soldered storage or special access requirements.

What to send for a quote

The exact manufacturer model and, if known, current drive details let us check a suitable replacement. We also need used space to choose capacity for a clone. The standard $99 labor HDD-to-SSD service includes cloning a readable old drive; the new SSD and shipping are additional.

An NVMe benchmark number is not a promise that your day-to-day laptop will feel proportionally faster than a SATA SSD. For a mechanical-drive replacement, either compatible SSD type can be a major improvement.
